Mike Frederick played defensive end for Virginia from 1991-1994. As a
freshman in 1991, Frederick started all 12 games, finishing with 57
tackles, 8 tackles for loss (4th on the team), 3 sacks, and leading the
team with 7 pass break-ups. In 1992, Frederick finished with similarly
impressive stats – 51 tackles (2nd only to Chris Slade among Virginia’
s defensive linemen), 6 tackles for loss, and 5 sacks. Frederick had a
breakout season as a junior in 1993, finishing with a career high in
tackles (74) and leading the team in sacks (11) and fumble recoveries
(2). In addition, Frederick racked up 21 tackles for loss, which led the
ACC and is tied for the most in Virginia history. Frederick was a team
captain his senior season, during which he posted 53 tackles, 15
tackles for loss (tied for the 9th most in school history), and 7 sacks. In
addition, he started every game for the 4th straight season and was
named defensive MVP of the Independence Bowl. Frederick finished
his career with 50 tackles for loss, 2nd only to Chris Slade (56), and 26
sacks, which ranks 4th on Virginia's all-time list. He was named to the
All-ACC team in 1993 (3rd Team) and 1994 (1st Team).
